5 Tips for Caring for the Elderly at Home

Spread the love

As parents and grandparents get older, the responsibility to care for them often falls on younger adult family members.  Being a caregiver is sometimes difficult work.  It can be helpful to research a bit about senior home care and get advice from others.  Here are five tips for caring for the elderly at home.

1. Don’t try to do everything alone

From the very start, you need to have a plan that involves every possible family member helping in some way.  It is unfair to have one person carry the entire burden of caregiving.  No matter how capable that person is, they will eventually get burnt out.  Discuss with your family who can provide things like groceries, periodic visits, and transportation.  If you start off recruiting the whole family, it is less likely that one person will become overwhelmed by senior home care duties down the road.

If you have already become a single caregiver to an elderly parent, try to find help.  Take time for yourself when you can.  Simple things like eating well and getting enough sleep can help you from burning out as well.  Be realistic about what you can do, and don’t beat yourself up about perceived mistakes.

2. Make sure there are healthy food options available

It is tempting for many seniors to eat processed food because it is easy to prepare.  Some elderly people don’t have the stamina to grocery shop, cook, and clean up.  A caregiver can help by grocery shopping with or for the senior, helping them meal prep, or even enrolling them in a food delivery service.  Whatever you choose, make sure nutritious meals are part of your senior care plan.

3. Keep the house safe

An important part of senior home care is making the home accessible for the elderly family member.  Think about their individual needs.  The last thing you want is a senior falling and injuring themselves, especially if no one else is there.  Even simple things like putting anti-slip stickers on the bathroom floor can make a big difference.  If the senior struggles with stairs, try to move everything they need to the ground floor or look into chair lifts.

4. Schedule activities

No one likes to be stuck at home all the time, seniors included.  Find activities in your neighborhood that your family member can participate in.  Whether it’s through a community center, library, or a senior care home, there is everything from bingo and board games to knitting and book clubs in many places all over the country.  A little research by a caregiver can go a long way.  Seniors have a fun day interacting with others, and the caregiver has a specified break time.  It’s a win-win situation.

5. Get help from professionals

No one can be a personal caregiver all on their own, especially if they have never had any training in senior care.  If you are becoming overwhelmed with your caregiver responsibilities, don’t hesitate to ask for help.  There are many companies that provide excellent senior home care.  Find one that will work with you and strives to meet your family’s unique needs.
